If you are just an awesome techie or wanna do some hi-fi stuff then go earn & enjoy in any company, dont think about starting anything. I often see people confident about technologies taking about startups. In my view to own a startup, just being sound in technologies would not help to make your dream million dollar deal.
With your brilliant knowledge on design patterns, springs, hibernates, lucene, cloud computing, etc .. you can build an awesome product. But do you know how to maintain & manage a team to add features to your product? Most importantly do you have a plan to attract traffic to your site (in case online product) ? Are you able to influence people and market about your product? Will you be able to handle high pressure and take important decisions at same time?
